Have You Always Wanted Whiter Teeth?

posted by Louise Forrest

Have you ever had your photo taken and been asked to smile, but the only thing that will make your mouth open is a vice? Many people are too embarrassed to show their teeth in public as they are not as white as they would like them to be! If you suffer from this problem you will know that it is humiliating and you will try and hide them as much as possible.

What Makes People be Ashamed of Their Teeth?

Everyday life can really take its toll on your teeth. Smoking, drinking cups of coffee, eating sweets; it all can stain your teeth. Another reason your teeth may not be completely healthy, could be simply due to your age. Naturally, the older you get, the more the enamel wears away, revealing the darker shade underneath. But depending upon your lifestyle and how well you actually look after you teeth can cause the teeth enamel to decay a lot sooner than it should!

So what can be done? Teeth whitening is often the treatment that people opt for. The treatment really is an attractive offer for many people who have very low self esteem and who would love the chance to be able to smile again. There are ways you can protect and whiten your teeth without teeth whitening but it is always better to consult your dentist first.

The Many Treatments Available

There are many over the counter treatments available in every drug store, but do they actually work, or is it just another marketing ploy selling these "miracle" whitening products?

The whitening kits which are widely available claim to make your teeth whiter in just a matter of days. It sounds great and with easy to follow instructions on how to use it, and even a little teeth coloring chart to see the results afterwards, we often buy into these products. However, whilst some are completely genuine, there are downsides to these little homemade kits.

The teeth whitening kits can help to remove certain stains and they can be effective. However, the drawbacks to these kits are often the lack of protection for the gums. The mouthpiece which comes with the kit is placed onto your teeth with the gel inside it. The problem is, the gel can actually go onto your gums and the guard does not really provide much of a protection. As a result it can cause damage to the gums, leading to more problems in the long run.

If you drink or smoke a lot, it is also advised that you stay away from tooth whitening treatments. This is because a high intake of hydrogen peroxide (bleach) can make you more vulnerable to adverse after-effects from the alcohol.

If you decide to have your teeth whitened, the dentist should be the first place you enquire about related procedures. When a dentist whitens your teeth, they use protection for your gums and they control the situation by making sure that everything is done properly. When using a home whitening kit, sometimes people can get impatient and not even finish the whole treatment, therefore it was a complete waste of time and money.

At the dentist, you can either have the treatment done there in different stages, or you can have a custom made kit to take home with you. This will be customized for each person to make sure the best results are achieved.

The other option is to use teeth whitening toothpaste. It is easy to find tooth whitening toothpaste, as it is sold literally everywhere. However, if you think that these toothpastes will get rid of dark stains, then you are likely to become disappointed. These toothpastes use abrasive agents, which in turn can cause severe damage to the tooth enamel, revealing grey teeth which then have to be sorted out by the dentist.

So it seems that if you need your teeth whitened and you actually want it done properly, the best thing to do is go to the dentist and get it sorted out as soon as you can. Don't waste your time and money on things that you are not sure about as most of the time, home kits simply do not work.
